In 2023, I moved to the UK with microlocs that were only four months old. I had no idea how I was going to get my hair done. I knew a little about maintaining it myself, which was just enough to survive if I had to, but I hadn't planned on being my own loctician.
When I arrived, I started searching. I couldn't find anyone who felt right. The people I came across were either too expensive, or they didn't seem to have enough knowledge of my hair. It felt like I had to choose between cost and competence. So I started doing my own reties.
"Every five weeks, an entire weekend of my life was dedicated to my hair. I realized Kenyan women in the UK were tired of complicated booking systems and salons that didn't understand them."
A few months later, I got my first client — S. She trusted me. Her first retie took almost six hours. We were both very patient. We had to be. She told her friend, and that friend told another. And just like that, my client base started to grow.
